How the night parades. How wretched all

A Rough Deliverance Collected Poems 19832013 eBook Nancy Bevilaqua

Almost by definition, good poetry requires vulnerability. Vulnerability inherently involves risk. It is tempting, at first blush, to suspect that a writer who is admittedly only a “sporadic” poet would be foolish to publish 30 years of poetry, let alone 30 years of poetry with intensely confessional content. After all, one of the benefits of becoming a professional is leaving your “early work” behind and reveling in your success, right? While each reader of A Rough Deliverance will judge for themselves whether the risks Nancy Bevilaqua undertakes in this endeavor are reasonable and efficacious, no one reading her engaging and intriguing Preface can argue that she is anything other than fully aware of both the gravity and potential pitfalls of this self-described “mystery tour.” She knows exactly what the hell she’s doing.

While there is definitely a discernible maturity of vision, voice and technique in her more recent works, do not skip the early stuff: the very first poem, The Act, in fact is both as passionate and stirring as you’d expect and surprisingly sophisticated in its execution. Similarly Bevilaqua’s sixth sonnet, Daddy Shows Up in a Dream as a Drunken Sailor, is remarkably direct with an almost epiphanic clarity. The Monkey Tree, Billie Holiday c. 1940, all the Holding Breath poems and Maadi Gedida are especially compelling highlights of the rest of the work. By the end of the collection, you realize that Bevilaqua’s early works are more like U2’s Boy or Nirvana’s Bleach than the sitcoms or toothpaste commercials of a now famous movie star. The risk was well worth taking. In total, A Rough Deliverance is a solid and moving collection.

A Rough Deliverance Collected Poems 19832013 eBook Nancy Bevilaqua Reviews

Buried under my covers on a Sunday morning, reading the first book of poems I've ever purchased...wow what an experience! In follow up to her brilliant book, "Holding Breath," Nancy shares with us the reflections (and, sometimes, demons) of her younger self. I read this cover to cover (well...turn page button to turn page button on my ) and, now, feel like I've seen another side of this kind and gentle soul.

Thank you so much Nancy!
A true look into what inspires a poet. Her poems are heartwarming, sad, and well written. I especially like the section of poems on her father. The last set called Gospel poems is a prelude to a set of poems she has written. Excellent.
A Rough Deliverance is a collection of honest and insightful poems. I thoroughly appreciate Nancy Bevilaqua's choice to collect them from a 30 year period as it is interesting to witness the poems grow, change, and flux as the book progresses. The poems are not just stories, they give the reader a sense of who she was and is. You discover how her father, while seemingly less than perfect, was undoubtedly important to her (as is the case with so many people for so many of us). You can sense her struggles in several of the poems. Meanwhile as I read I get a sense for her fragility as well as her strength and confidence. The section she ultimately chose to include although hesitantly is raw and vulnerable, a brave feat for her to include it and proof of her dedication to poetry as a form of expression through the ages. Her love and sorrow evident.

All of the poems in this book have emotion and wisdom behind them. I enjoyed going into these moments with her and having the chance to experience the life she had from her perspectives. In addition to her strong voice and reflective tones the book ends with yet another emotional and honest look into the life of someone she knew who lived with AIDS and from her memoir Holding Breath A Memoir of AIDS' Wildfire Days . You can feel how she cared for this person as well as getting a taste for the experience yourself. Artistic, creative and heartfelt. I appreciate her giving us chance to step inside her life and its progression.

Cheers!
