At age thirteen, Constance of Eumhal watches her only brother march off to a war started by their overlords, the Debenese. After their father, the Lord of Eumhal, was accused of treason and imprisoned, leading to his death, this is their best opportunity to prove their loyalty to the king of Deben. But after her brother’s departure, Constance learns that her estranged mother, a daughter of that same king, has made an arranged marriage for her to a Debenese lord. The marriage will place Eumhal, one of the lordships in the now-conquered land of Cimbria, in the hands of Constance’s husband-to-be, and, should her brother die during the war, Eumhal will be more firmly in the hands of the Debenese than ever. To prevent this, Constance prays to the goddess Rigantona, goddess of warfare, wisdom, and healing, for guidance. Rigantona appears to Constance in a vision offering to protect Eumhal from the Debenese if Constance will serve her and carry out the goddess’ will in the human world. Constance vows to serve the goddess and runs away from home, and her would-be husband, to fulfill that vow, first by training as a swordfighter and then by traveling across the western world to find and protect the rightful king of Cimbria. In the course of her travels, Constance will risk life and limb, discover treachery within the king of Deben’s own forces, and find unexpected allies in her quest.

This refreshing new fantasy includes interesting, believable characters who certainly break out of usual fantasy stereotypes. Although this is not an historical novel per se, as someone who has studied early and medieval Celtic history and culture professionally, I really appreciated the way Johnson preserved the veracity of the spirit of what we know from research about early Celtic cultures, while creating a fresh and engaging new story that felt like real history. Even when written by writers who consider themselves knowledgeable about the Celtic world, too often Celtic-themed fantasies distort the historical background so much that it becomes nearly unrecognizable to those of us who know the original stories. A Celtic scholar herself, Johnson clearly loves and respects the Celtic analogues she has drawn material and makes sure that she remains true to her research by maintaining accurate Celtic-ness her story. I found the whole book not only enjoyable, but it made me think about issue beyond the text as well as feel connected to her characters-- both of which are must-haves for me in order to continue reading an author's works. While some bits of this one would have had a bit more punch if they had been condensed somewhat (it was just a bit too long for me, hence 4 stars instead of 5), I am truly eager to read the next book as well as future installments in this series.Product details

Daughter of the West Avatar eBook Lizabeth J Johnson Reviews
The author does an excellent job of both bringing alive Stanzi's world and of making the people in it complex and relatable. The battles and bravery are well balanced with the foibles and failings of the main characters, and it is never predictable. I found Daughter of the West to be a page turner, and began to be worried when I found myself half way through and realized from the scope of the story that it was part of a series rather than a stand-alone book. I hope the second volume comes out soon.
This is the start of something that I hope is long and ongoing. Classic fantasy with celticish overtones from a knowledgeable source but with fresh concepts and new perspective.
I really enjoyed this book with its unexpected turns and fierce characters. I hope the next one is available soon!
What a wonderful read, I thoroughly enjoyed this beginning of a series and look forward to reading more. Already passed it on to friends and family to experience. LOVED IT great job Liz.
Well composed and exciting with vivid detail. A vision of the great adventure of a bold heroine as she embarks on her hero quest. This book would be an excellent gift for a bright teen girl.
I enjoyed my five and a half hour journey following Stanzi as she discovered her place in the turning of the world's events. The tale itself is fairly standard but telling it from the point of view of a young woman just coming into her own was refreshing. I grew up reading science fiction and fantasy published in the 50s through the 90s and the lack protagonists who were other then white male so Stanzi was a welcome change. The other characters are plausible and engaging. The writing is clean and evokes vivid imagery. I look forward to reading the other three books.
I don't write a lot of reviews, but I read this book and just had to write one! From the very first paragraph you know "Daughter Of the West" is going to be full of adventure, and it doesn't disappoint. Stanzi is a young girl who finds herself facing an arranged marriage not of her choosing. Desperate to get out of the marriage, she prays to the goddess Rigantona. The goddess agrees to help Stanzi if she becomes her avatar - for non-fantasy buffs, this is a human that does the bidding of God's.
This book is beautifully written. The scenes are rich in detail and will really help readers paint a picture of the story in their mind. It was also very refreshing to read about such a strong female main character who tries to be honest in everything she does.
This is the first book I've read from the author Lizabeth Johnson. I enjoyed this book very much, and it is a definite page turner. I spent many nights staying up way too late because I had to know what was going to happen next. I would definitely recommend this book. Not just to the age range it is targeted to, but adults also! I really hope the author has started on the second book, because I cannot wait to find out what Stanzi's next adventure is going to be!!
